“Everyone’s doing it” is not the only motivation for looking for a date online, but it does mean that there’s a larger selection of people to “choose” from. As well, more and more people are accepting the idea of making connections online as a modern trend.
One advantage of chatting with someone before meeting them is the ability to ask questions and express yourself about things that you may never touch upon when face to face with a person. Sexual tastes is a prime example. It’s easier to ask “What’s your favorite position?” to a virtual stranger than it is to a new in-person acquaintance. One can “filter” prospective dates according to what they are looking for, sexual openness and compatibility, and other such factors.
Another advantage of online dating is also its major disadvantage–sheer numbers of prospective dates to choose from. With so many people who have ads or online identities, we can end up meeting people we would never simply “bump into” in a world without internet chatting and other social networking. However, sometimes it’s too easy to go looking for someone online. You don’t have to dress up (unless you’re camming!), or even leave the comfort of your own home to browse singles and even attached or married people who are also looking. It’s certainly a temptation that has received a lot of press and has put strain on established relationships.
In this section, we offer articles that explore issues surrounding online dating and review dating sites.
